Tidepooling near San Francisco
- Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Moss Beach — A protected reef about 30 minutes south with docent-led low-tide walks; no collecting.
- Duxbury Reef, Bolinas — California's largest exposed shale reef — acres of pools on a minus tide.
- Sutro Baths / Lands End — Rocky shelves below the ruins expose small pools; watch the surf here.
What to look for
ochre and bat sea stars, aggregating anemones, lined chitons, porcelain crabs, purple sea urchins, nudibranchs, harbor seals hauled out nearby.
Best time of year
The lowest daytime tides cluster around new and full moons — early mornings in late spring and summer (May–July), and mid-to-late afternoon during the late-fall and winter king-tide cycles (November–January).
