Tidepooling near Astoria
- Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach — A designated Marine Garden 40 minutes south; interpreters on the beach at daytime lows from spring through fall, puffins overhead.
- Indian Beach, Ecola State Park — Boulder pools at both ends of the cove inside the state park.
- South Jetty, Fort Stevens — Jetty-rock pools where the Columbia meets the sea; good on calm days only.
What to look for
ochre sea stars, giant green anemones, hermit crabs, purple sea urchins, sculpins, tufted puffins (on the rock, not in the pools).
Best time of year
The year's lowest daytime tides land near the summer solstice — big midday minus tides from May through July. Winter's extreme lows mostly fall at night, so plan summer trips.
